Advanced Search Operator Reference

Advanced Search Query is provided for beginners and users who do not wish to learn the format of a search statement. Searches are entered by typing in words or phrases and choosing options from a menu.

The operators which can be used to specify conditional searches in the Menu-Assisted Query are:

AND which ALSO contain ...

  • Locates documents which contain both of the entered words or phrases.
E.g. documents that contain child and which also contain adoption

OR which contain ...

  • Locates documents which contain any one of the entered words or phrases.
E.g. documents that contain attorney or which contain lawyer.
  • But do NOT contain ...

  • Locates documents which contain the first word or phrase, but not the second.
E.g. documents that contain theft but do not contain misdemeanor.
  • Within a PARAGRAPH of ...

  • Locates documents which contain both words or phrases, but also within a paragraph on either side of each other.
E.g. documents that contain child within a paragraph adoption.
  • In the same PARAGRAPH as ...

    • Locates documents which contain both words or phrases in the same paragraph.
E.g. documents that contain child support in the same paragraph as guidelines.

The difference between the Within a Paragraph of... and In the Same Paragraph as... operators is that Within a Paragraph of.. will find words where they are not actually in the same paragraph, but are instead in successive paragraphs.

    For example, the document:

The custodial parent requests child support.

The guidelines look at a number of factors.

Will be found by the query:
child support Within a Paragraph of guidelines

but will not be found by:
    child support
In the Same Paragraph as guidelines

    Within 10 WORDS of ...

  • Locates documents in where both words or phrases appear in the same paragraph and within ten words of one another.
E.g. documents that contain tree within 10 words of neighbor.
  • Followed anywhere by ...

  • Locates documents in where the first word or phrase is followed anywhere by the second.
E.g. documents that contain discrimination followed anywhere by gender.
